The Chevrolet Camaro is no stranger to pacing the Indianapolis 500, but Chevy announced yesterday a specially prepared 2011 Camaro SS Convertible has been assigned to Indy duty for this year’s race.
The new Indy Camaro was officially unveiled at the open gala for Barrett-Jackson’s annual auction spectacle in Scottsdale, Arizona. Wearing a paint scheme inspired by the 1969 Camaro SS pace car, the 2011 model wears white exterior paint with twin orange racing stripes, along with unique lettering running down both sides of the car. Orange leather seating surfaces within complete the look, as do headlamp bezels inspired by the headlamp doors used on the ’69 model.

For those keeping score, this will mark the 22nd time a Chevrolet has served as an Indy pace car, and the seventh time a Camaro has been assigned to the job. Perhaps even more coincidentally, 2011 marks the 100th birthday of both the Indianapolis 500 and the Chevrolet brand itself.
