If you have to take the bus to work every day, then the wait to get on one can be pretty tedious, especially if the weather isn’t great. Your phone or a personal media player like an iPod touch can help past the time through access to games, but you may not want to have those devices on display while standing in the street.
Yahoo! has come up with another idea that allows you to play games while keeping your belongings safely zipped up in a bag. Across San Francisco the company has installed 20 large touchscreen displays in bus shelters. These displays are networked together and offer up four games you can play against people in other shelters or on your own.
The name of this new gaming concept: the Yahoo! Bus Stop Derby.
Each game can be played solo or multiplayer and Yahoo! tracks the highscores which can be accessed online by anyone. The four games on offer are:

  • Snap-Happy
  • Chatter Scatter
  • Sport-a-pult
  • Incoming!
Yahoo! want to bolster some competition so you choose a neighborhood to represent before playing. At the moment North Beach seem to be edging out Tenderloin for the high score top spot according to the official Bus Stop Derby website.

Unfortunately, the touchscreens won’t be staying in the bus shelters permanently. Yahoo! will be taking them down on January 28. So if you live in the area go and check them out before it’s too late
