It was hoped that the latest Windows Phone 7 update was going to appear this week (March 8 to be precise), and bring to the table the first of its major fixes in the shape of copy/paste support. But like many people I waited in anticipation for the message to appear on my phone stating it was ready, only to be disappointed that the update never arrived.
Now it seems that update is not likely to appear until the end of this month. According to Winrumours, Microsoft broke silence over the delay yesterday and issued a statement mentioning that due to the different number of manufacturers supporting the latest operating system they needed more time to get things right.
Microsoft’s Eric Hautala, General Manager of Customer Experience Engineering, said that though many of the changes that are pumped into the new firmware are done in-house, they still get several proprietary firmwares from companies like HTC who have sent fixes of their own that they want to include. This combined process makes up the final firmware release which will eventually make it to the phone, but Microsoft first have to dispatch the cocktail of changes to the carriers around the world who will then conduct their own quality controlled tests before sending the firmware back – this of course takes time.
Hautala continues by saying that they work closely with their carrier partners and try to encourage them to test the software as quickly as possible, but it’s difficult to hurry them as it’s still their network and some require more time than others. After all this extensive testing, Microsoft will then be able to send out the update to phones, which incidently now uses the same process that you find on Windows PCs.
The update should be worth waiting for though, as it brings to the table multiple planned fixes and enhancements. The first is the aforementioned copy and paste, but this will be followed by multitasking, Twitter integration, and Internet Explorer 9 mobile.
