Verizon Wireless made a huge push with Google’s Android operating system when it announced the first Droid branded smartphone in October 2009. The Droid was marketed as an alternative to Apple’siPhone which was offered exclusively by AT&T at the time. In January of this year, Apple and Verizon Wireless announced that the iPhone 4 was coming to the carrier marking the official end of AT&T’s exclusivity. Now there is word that Verizon Wireless plans to diversify their smartphone offerings even more.
WinRumors is reporting that Verizon Wireless plans to launch its first Windows Phone 7 device in late March. It is believed the carrier may announce the HTC 7 Trophy as early as Monday according to sources. The HTC 7 Trophy is expected to retail for $200 with a 2-year agreement and specs including:
  • Screen – 3.8-inch (diagonal) widescreen 480-by-800 WVGA, Multi-touch touchscreen display
  • Camera – 5 megapixel, autofocus with flash, rear-facing
  • Dual microphone
  • 3-axis accelerometer
  • Digital compass
  • Proximity sensor
  • Ambient light sensor
  • CPU – 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
  • Memory – 576MB RAM
  • Memory Card – Internal 8GB
  • Storage – 512MB ROM
  • Wi-Fi
  • FM Radio
  • GPS
The HTC 7 Trophy will launch with Microsoft’s first update for Windows Phone 7 codenamed NoDo. The update is expected to improve the mobile operating system’s start-up and resume times, and finally brings copy and paste functionality to its smartphone users.
Unfortunately, NoDo has been plagued by delays due to concerns from operators and device manufacturers. Clearly those concerns have been addressed to the satisfaction of Verizon Wireless, Sprint and HTC with the HTC 7 Trophy arriving in March, and the HTC Arrive appearing on Sprint’s network with the same NoDo update on March 20.
