it all depends on what you want to do and at what level. also budget comes into play.
my brother is a sound engineer/beat maker.
the two main programs he uses are Cubase and Reason. they are the best of the best.
there are others like FL studio that are easier to use but they are entery level.
if you dont have the ability to pirate software and have a low budget try some of the open source/freeware linux software that have been ported over to windows/mac.
