Viliv’s convertible touchscreen netbook, the S10 blade, has been much anticipated by netbook enthusiasts… but much of its thunder was stolen, rightly or wrongly, by January 27th’s Apple iPad announcement, which smudged the luster of many other announced tablet-like products.
Even so, the Viliv S100 Blade is worth another look: their pre-order page has finally gone live over at import site Dynamism. Seven SKUs of the S10 Blade are available to choose from, and iPad or no, it still looks like quite a capable machine for people who wants a Windows-based tablet with a hardware keyboard for an affordable price.
The lowest end configuration of the S10 Blade comes with Windows XP, a 60GB hard drive and a 1.6GHz Atom processor, and is therefore probably the worst of the options, since XP lacks Windows 7’s OS multi-touch support.
Luckily, the rest of the S10 Blade configurations all come with Windows 7. There’s options to choose from: you can pick either a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom Z530 CPU or the beefier Intel 2.0Ghz Atom Z550 CPU. Otherwise, you get your standard netbook trappings, including 1GB of RAM (a bit paltry in today’s day and age), WiFi b/g and Bluetooth, along with optional 3G modems. Connectivity options include two USB 2.0 ports, a USB slave port, TV and VGA out, and up to 10 hours of battery life.
Not a bad little machine, but unfortunately, while the S10 Blade is available for pre-order now, there’s still no prices listed… which seems a bit strange, all things considered. My guess, though, is they are trying to figure out if they can price competitively to the iPad.
