If you’d asked me before I saw the press release, I would have said that tablets killed off the past experiments for mobile carriers pushing subsidized netbooks on subscribers, but either I’m wrong or Verizon didn’t get the memo, since they’ve just unveiled the latest addition to their line-up of gadgets: an updated version of the 11.6-inch HP Pavilion dm1 which will work on Verizon’s weirdo 3G network.
The specs aren’t grea. Inside, you’ll find a 1.3GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K325 processor, Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), 2GB of DDR3 memory, ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD 4225 GPU, a 1366 x 768 resolution, an inbuilt webcam and Altec Lansing speakers, as well as the usual gaggle of USB and VGA ports.
The selling point here is that Verizon is pitching this as a netbook for international business users: not only can you use it on Verizon’s network, but they’ve even thrown in a SIM card that will allow the netbook to roam in foreign climes.
The problem here is price: Verizon wants $199 for this with a two year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate. Given that a regular dm1 costs just $250 more, which you’ll probably double in subsidy fees, this is a very hard netbook to recommend.
