If you didn’t already feel that Lenovo’s ThinkPad lineup was muddled enough, get ready for an all new line: the L series. The new L412 and L512 are “designed for business, government, and education customers” and in addition to affordable pricing they will be some of the greenest computers available today.
Details from the release:

  • Choices of the latest Intel Core i3 and i5 processors with Turbo Boost and Hyperthreading technology
  • 16:9 HD antiglare displays on the 14-inch L412 and 15-inch L512
  • Choices of Intel integrated or ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 with 512MB DDR3 graphics
  • 3G/4G wireless connectivity options with Gobi 2000 module support for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon
  • Multitouch touchpads
  • Up to 8 hours of battery life (with the 9-cell battery)
  • Up to 8GB DDR3 RAM
  • Expansion with 4 USB ports/1 powered, combo eSATA/USB port, support for DisplayPort and VGA
  • Windows 7 with Lenovo Enhanced Experience featuring up to 57% faster bootup and shutdown time

The L412 will be the 14-inch widescreen and the L512 will be a 15-incher. Specifications for the two will be almost identical, including the screen resolution. The L412 will weigh 5.22 lb with dimensions of 32-to-36 mm x 344 mm x 233 mm, while the L512 will start at 5.76 lb and be 32-to-36mm x 380 mm x 247 mm.
On the environmentally-friendly side of things the laptops use up to 30% post-consumer recycled materials, for components like the LCD lid, palm rests and top and bottom of the case. The release notes much of these materials are coming from “water jugs” and “used IT equipment” so it seems like there could be a lot of plastic in this systems, though that could depend on what IT equipment the material is being harvested from. Both laptops are EPEAT Gold certified and Energy Star 5.0 rated. Both machines use LED backlighting, are arsenic-free, and RoHs compliant.
The L412 and L512 start at $649 and will be available in mid-May.
