There might not be too many people who will disagree when I say I could do with fewer cords and wires in my life.

The TDK WR700 is a set of wireless headphones that will help you sit back and relax, eliminating one more cord from your life. You can now watch TV in bed or have the sound of the gun closer to your ears when gaming, or rock to music without disturbing your significant other, at least acoustically.

The set has two parts — the transmitter and the headphones themselves that receive the signal. Each is powered by two AAA batteries. The transmitter is a little bigger than it should be and can block out other ports on your laptop/device in certain cases. For devices that feature the port inside a carved panel, you'll require an extension cable to plug it in.

The story is nicer on the other end, though. The headphones, with cushioning on the earcups and the top, are easy on your head and can be worn for hours. However, because they're on-ear, they may let external sound in. There is also no noise-cancellation feature so you'll find yourself increasing the volume in more noisy places.

You can adjust the volume with the buttons on the right earcup — they are easy to reach. The same earcup also features the power button while the left is where you put the batteries in.

Wireless headphones can be powered by one of two technologies; the first being infrared, which eliminates interference but require the headphone to be in line of sight of the transmitter. The other is radio frequency which removes that requirement but is susceptible to interference. The WR700 uses a proprietary technology called Kleer, which is a specialised radio-frequency protocol that helps reduce interference while maintaining audio quality.

The range of the headphones is about ten metres. There will be mixed results when you walk into an adjacent room. As for sound quality, it was for the most part good but not outstanding. Anyone coming from a cheap to mid-priced headphone will notice an improvement. The sound quality is not a deal breaker, but the bass could do with more depth and I would prefer the mid tones crisper. Despite the problem of the transmitter, the TDK WR700 (Dh730) is a good set of headphones which in addition to freedom, offers comfort and good sound quality with an impressive battery life (30-40 hours).
