Technically, T-Mobile doesn’t have a 4G network in place yet, but that’s not stopping them from supercharging their existing HSPA 3G network to near 4G speeds through the magic of HSPA+ and calling it 4G.
Tomato, toe-mah-toe, as they say. Still, even an HSPA+ network needs new phones to take advantage of it, and so it’s no surprise that T-Mobile intends on rolling out a few new “4G” HSPA+ handsets… including a new 4G version of the iconic T-Mobile Sidekick as well as a 4G version of the venerable Samsung Galaxy S.
The announcement came by way of T-Mobile USA CEO Phillip Humm, who said:

“We will launch as new the Samsung Galaxy S 4G … and coming soon, will also be a Sidekick 4G. Everybody knows the Sidekick, and we’re going to relaunch the Sidekick and bring it as a 4G device, Android based, into the market.”
Although the Galaxy S 4G is probably going to get the biggest headlines, I’m fascinated by the concept of an Android-based Sidekick. The T-Mobile Sidekick used to run on a custom OS made by the lads at Danger, who moved on to create the failed Microsoft Kin, so a shift to Android is a big change indeed. My guess is it can only put new life in what was once of the most popular social phones around.
