Sony has announced details of its second-generation update to the Vaio P range of smartbooks/netbooks. You may remember the Vaio P as the device Sony said was pocket friendly even though it was way too big to fit in most pockets. This time round Sony say they are “easy to carry”.
The update sees a number of changes introduced which make for a much faster machine. Here’s the basic spec:

  • Intel Atom 1.6GHz Z530 or 2.13GHz Z560
  • 8″ 1600×768 LCD
  • 2GB RAM
  • 64GB SSD
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
  • WiMAX, 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth
  • GPS, Digital Compass, Accelerometer
  • 0.31 megapixel camera and microphone
  • 619 grams
The Vaio P sports a touchpad on the right-hand side of the screen as well as a nub on the keyboard for mouse navigation. There will be five color options including as well as a Crocodile skin option.

Sony has also decided that the Vaio P will include PS3 Remote Play compatibility. We first heard about PS3 Remote Play when it was enabled with the PS3 3.30 firmware late last month. Existing Vaio owners will miss out though, as it is only compatible with future Vaio models of which the Vaio P seems to be one of the first. Using the feature you can control your PS3 and watch media streamed from it using your Vaio.
According to netbooknews.de (translated) we can expect to pay 665 Euros (US$865) for the Vaio P which will be launched in Japan on May 22nd.
