Sony is facing a Vaio laptop recall due to a fault that could see the machines heat up to the point where they distort in shape and burn your skin.
The recall affects two models that were shipped to the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Japan. The Vaio F11 and Vaio CW2 series shipped since January are the laptops in question. Shipments of the 535,000 affected units to each region breakdown as follows:
- U.S.: 259,000
- Europe: 103,000
- Asia: 120,000
- Japan: 52,000
Sony has explained the heat build-up occurs when charging of the battery is initiated when it is almost dead. The good news is users may be able to fix the problem themselves by downloading a new BIOS firmware to update their machine. However, Sony is offering to collect and repair laptops too.
To check if your Vaio is affected visit the Sony Vaio support site and enter the two-part serial number of your laptop.
