Sony has unveiled its new smartphone, dubbed the Xperia Z Ultra. The phablet has a massive 6.44-inch display, making it the biggest smartphone that the company has made. The display on the device uses Sony’s new Triluminous technology and has a full HD resolution of 1080p, giving it a pixel density of 342 ppi.

Under the hood, the Xperia Z Ultra runs on a Snapdragon 800, making it the first device to run on Qualcomm’s high-end chip. The quad-core processor is clocked at 2.2 GHz and has LTE and HD Voice capabilities if your carrier supports it. Out of the box, the phablet runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean along with a layer of Sony’s own interface.

Connectivity options include all the bells and whistles that we’ve grown accustomed to in higher-end devices, including LTE, 3G, 2G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC.

The Xperia Z Ultra is a massive phone with quite a bit of horsepower

Despite the massive size, the Xperia Z Ultra shouldn’t be too painful to handle owing to its ultra-thin 6.5 mm width, making it the slimmest smartphone with a full HD display in the world. The tablet weighs 212 g and has the same OmniBalance design as the Xperia Z and the Tablet Z. The tablet will be available in the same colour options as the Xperia Z—black, white and purple.

The Z Ultra has IP55 and IP58 certification, which means that the phablet is essentially dust resistant and waterproof up to a depth of 5 feet for 30 minutes. It also has an 8 megapixel shooter on the back with Sony’s Exmor RS sensor, giving it all the same camera capabilities as the Xperia Z, including HDR video recording and the Superior Auto mode.

All of this is kept alive by a 3000 mAh battery. To give it better battery life, the phablet is equipped with Sony’s Stamina mode, which lets you manage apps using power-hungry resources such as your data connection.

One of the most interesting things about the phablet is that it doesn’t need a specialised capacitive stylus to use. Users can use any pencil or pen with a tip diameter of more than 1mm and the device will be able to recognise the input.

The Xperia Z Ultra will launch globally in Q3 2013.
