Wouldn't it be cool if you could access facebook on your fridge? If that sounds not-so-smart, how about a fridge which knows that you will run out of your favourite fruit tonight and not only alert you but also login to your online shopping account and purchase a kilo of the fruit which will be delivered to your doorstep by the time you even realize that you are hungry..

Yes, it is aptly named Smart Fridge and is going to be one of the flagship offerings of Samsung & LG for the homemaker. At the first glance, one can notice a proportionate 7 inch touch screen on the door but under the hood, there are processors, operating system, sensors & antennae.

Basic features being access to facebook, picasa web albums (you can set it to slideshow mode similar to digital photoframe), twitter and customized web browsers to connect to the internet through WiFi and communication with smartphones via bluetooth.

Advanced features include detection of food items by automatic scanning of barcodes (it can even scan a printed bill), using the camera on door to detect face of the person approaching the fridge and based on his profile data, suggest suitable food items (for example suggestion of low calorie items available in the fridge for the diet conscious. It can be programmed to raise alerts if the person exceeds calorie intake that day).

The fridge can connect to the internet to download recipes. Since it has a dynamic database of the food items stored inside at any given time (because it has barcode reader and RFID sensors to read labels on the food items), can suggest recipes that can be prepared only using the existing items in the fridge.

Because it is always connected to the internet, the owner can access it remotely from a supermarket to find its contents and make purchase decisions on the go.
