Seagate has today unveiled the first ever 3 terabyte external desktop hard drive. It’s called the 3TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk and adds 50% more storage over the previous largest drives on offer in the GoFlex range.
With 3TB of storage it’s possible to store 120 HD movies, 1,500 video games, and more photos and music than most people probably own. The good news is access to the masses of content stored on the drive won’t be slow. Seagate has had the foresight to include the ability to upgrade to USB 3.0 or FireWire 8.0 via a cable switch. This requires a special $39.99 GoFlex Upgrade cable, but means you don’t have to buy a new drive in the future if new faster connections appear.
The new drive is pre-loaded with backup software that uses encryption from Memeo, a comes with a USB 2.0 adaptor and cable. Seagate are also keen to point out the drive has been, “specially engineered to overcome the Windows HDD limitation of 2.1TB.”
Expect to pay around $249.99 for the 3TB model which is available from today.
