With iPad 2 now an official product launching March 11, I think it’s safe to say that consumers are pretty happy with what was unveiled by Steve Jobs on Wednesday, and competitors are running scared. Even if they can compete on features, Apple has a price point that seems unattainable by any other vendor due to Apple’s intelligent early purchasing deals and by managing to secure 60% of the world’s touch panel output.
But in a refreshing change to the boasts and quiet confidence of competing companies before new product launches, Samsung has admitted that the iPad 2 is going to change its plans for the 10″Galaxy Tab.
Lee Don-joo, executive vice president of Samsung Mobile, has admitted that the iPad 2 is surprisingly thin at just 8.8mm, making it thinner than the Tab. His response to such a fact:
We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate. Apple made it very thin.
Don-joo also admitted Samsung would now have to reconsider the price of the Galaxy Tab 10″. The 7″ version was already more expensive than the iPad at $900, and the 10″ model was set to be even higher than that. But with iPad 2 retaining its $499 starting price, and having features that now better the Tab in some areas, that is now being reconsidered internally.
So even if you aren’t a fan of the iPad, Apple may have just done you a favor as the new 10″ Galaxy Tabs coming to market may be cheaper and possibly even thinner. It’s not going to manage a $499 price tag, but it could end up shipping for the same price as the high-end iPad 2 at $829.
