All the Android tablet rumors are swirling around NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset these days, and Samsung is the latest company after Acer, Asus and Toshiba to be tipped as planning their own Tegra 2 tablet in 2011.
According to Digitimes’ manufacturer sources, Samsung’s move into Tegra comes as NVIDIA has been slashing the price of Tegra 2 across the board in order to get a firm foothold in the nascent tablet market.
That Samsung was lured perhaps indicates the extremity of the price reductions, because Samsung has its own SoC facilities… most notably in the Galaxy Tab, which uses Samsung’s own 1GHz Hummingbird SoC. That same chip is in the Galaxy S and Nexus 2.
Tegra 2 is a step up from the Hummingbird, and there’s speculation that it might be a stopgap solution for now. Either way, it sounds pretty likely we’ll see a slew of new Samsung tablets — including at least one Tegra 2 model — at this year’s CES.
