Samsung has a strong track record of producing low power, high performance ARM-based chips for smartphones and other mobile devices. The company’s 1GHz Hummingbird CPU is one of the fastest ARM chips on the market right now. But apparently that’s not good enough for Samsung. Today the company announced a new 1GHz dual core chip called the Orion.
The Samsung Orion is an ARM Cortex A9-based chip built using a 45nm processor. Samsung says not only will the new chip be capable of playing HD video, but it will support recording video at 1080p resolution. The company says the Orion chip will also offer 5 times the 3D graphics performance available from previous Samsung chips.
The Orion chip also has a triple display controller, which means a phone or other mobile device can handle two on-board displays (say front and back), while at the same time pumping out a signal to a TV or monitor over HDMI output.
Samsung plans to begin shipping Orion chips to some customers toward the end of 2010 with mass production scheduled to begin in the first half of 2011.
