Samsung has already had some impressive technology on display at the SID 2010 conference. Yesterday we saw the unveiling of a 46″ transparent LCD TV, but today’s device demonstration is even more impressive.
The screen you see above is an 18.5″ Samsung monitor sitting next to a PC. It’s a pretty typical setup, but this monitor has one major difference over what we are used to — it is powered over USB 2.0 and requires no separate mains connection.
Samsung were able to achieve USB-only power by cutting the display’s power draw to just 6.3 watts. The panel itself is TN-mode and uses LED edge backlighting. It is capable of displaying a 1366 x 768 resolution, 250cd/m2 brightness, and has a 1000:1 contrast ratio.
The one downside to the display is its lifetime. Typical LCD panels have a usable life of around 50,000 hours, but this Samsung model only achieves a still respectable 30,000 hours.
