If a RIM PlayBook is on your shopping list this March, make sure you have a pre-order in place as RIM is not making that many of them.
While the iPad is shifting millions of units, RIM has got manufacturer Quanta producing between 150,000-200,000 a month. That’s a maximum of 2.4 million in the first year, and worst case 1.8 million by March 2012. Such figures also suggest 1 million available for launch seems unlikely.
The reason for such a small quantity of tablets is being put down to RIM’s tight restrictions on where the PlayBook can be made. The company do not want the blueprints getting into the hands of Chinese manufacturers who will then produce their own, cheaper, knock-offs of the device. So it is thought RIM is restricting production to Quanta in Taiwan.
There is room for production to be ramped in in Taiwan, apparently, but it’s unclear whether RIM will choose to do that. What’s clear is come the launch in March, getting your hands on a PlayBook could be surprisingly difficult.
