George Hotz, GeoHot, has spent 5 weeks figuring out how to hack the PS3 and had it pretty much figured out last week with complete access to the system. In a posting on his blog last Friday he said there was no plan to release his findings yet because they weren’t strong enough.
With another weekend of work behind him Geohot has changed his mind. Posting yesterday he said:
In the interest of openness, I’ve decided to release the exploit. Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.
There’s also a development wiki Geohot points to for others to use his work and post their findings. There are still pieces of the puzzle missing such as missing HV calls, memory maps, a 3D GPU driver, and better boot chain documentation is required. But the exploit as posted allows, “full memory space access and therefore ring 0 access from OtherOS”.
Now we have to wait and see if other hackers pick up the gauntlet.
