The new Powercolor HD 7970 Vortex II will use a custom PCB and feature the same Tahiti XT GPU with 2048 stream processors in 32 GCN Compute Units and 3GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 384-bit memory interface.

The card will end up with pretty impressive factory overclock, 1100MHz for the GPU and 1425MHz (5.7GHz effective) for the memory.

The main feature of the card is its Vortex II cooler that gives users an ability to choose between higher airflow or lower noise by simply pulling those two fans in or out.

The massive heatsink below the fans is connected to the GPU via four 8mm nickel-plated copper heatpipes.

Whether or not the bump in speed will be enough to put it toe-to-toe against NVIDIA’s new champion remains to be seen, but either way, this is shaping up to be an enticing variation of the Radeon HD 7970.

Trouble is, the custom cooler and factory overclocks suggest a jacked-up price, and if the Vortex II edition comes in at £450 or beyond, it may struggle to stand up against the £400 GeForce GTX 680.
