Apple will release OS X Mavericks in October alongside a new range of Macs, according to reports

OS X Mavericks was announced in June at WWDC. The company promised an autumn release but refused to be pressed on a more precise date.

Now, anonymous sources speaking to 9to5Mac have claimed that Apple will release the next version of its desktop operating system at an event in October.

It has previously been thought that Apple may release OS X Mavericks alongside its new iPhones and iOS 7. However, some commentators have expressed doubts that the company would launch new products from three categories at the same time.

History also supports that hypothesis. Apple has traditionally released its update to its desktop software shortly after its autumn financial statement.

October is when Apple is next due to issue its financial statement.

Reports have also suggested that because OS X engineers are busy focusing on iOS 7, the software is not quite ready yet for release.

Apple is also expected to announce a launch date for its new, American-made Mac Pros soon. The company unveiled the radical update to its top of the line model at WWDC in June.

The company is also expected to launch new iMacs and MacBook Pros in the coming months.
