New telecom policy approved, India to be roaming free
The Union Cabinet today approved the National Telecom Policy 2012 (NTP 2012) amidst heavy expectations from hopefuls. It also authorised DoT to finalise the new Unified Licensing regime with the approval of Minister of Communications & IT. The policy attempts to focus on providing secure, reliable, affordable and high quality converged telecommunication services anytime, anywhere for an accelerated inclusive socio-economic development. The latest National Telecom Policy for 2012 will replace the older regulation, which has been in effect, since more than 12 years now. According to the new reforms brought about by this policy, mobile users will be able to enjoy free roaming and will be allowed to keep their phone numbers, even if they plan to change their service providers anywhere across the country, as per the Nationwide Intra Circle MNP that has been proposed.
No more roaming charges!
The new National Telecom Policy came in with a couple of changes, in accordance to what had been planned earlier. There will now be a One Nation, One License policy across services and areas that will effectively eradicate roaming charges. As a result of this, difference between local and STD calls in the country will no longer be prevalent. Abolishing roaming charges certainly looks like the one thing that would appeal to the masses a lot, since those traveling will not have to worry about steep bills.
As far as telecom operators and mobile operators are concerned, separate liceneses for different parts of the country will not be required - a single one will be more than enough. The following norms have been brought forth in the policy:
Increase rural teledensity from the current level of around 39 to 70 by the year 2017 and 100 by the year 2020
Repositioning of Mobile phone- as an instrument of empowerment
Broadband –“'Broadband For All” at a minimum download speed of 2 Mbps
