Back in February, we reported a rumor that AT&T’s iPhone would get the same mobile hotspot functionality as Verizon’s iPhone through the release iOS 4.3. It was believed that the iOS would be available for download in conjunction with AT&T’s launch of the HTC Inspire 4G which also featured the AT&T Mobile Hotspot application. Unfortunately, we soon learned that was only a rumor leaving AT&T iPhone users without their mobile hotspot functionality. Now it seems we may have more specific information thanks to some leaked insider info.
The iOS 4.3 update for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad will be available for download from iTunes beginning March 11th. With it comes the missing mobile hotspot functionality, or Personal Hotspot as Apple calls it, for AT&T iPhone owners which allows connections for up to five devices. Three of the devices will be supported through Wi-Fi while the other two are supported through a Bluetooth or USB connection. To conserve battery, if your Personal Hotspot is no longer being used the iPhone will turn it off.
Besides the Personal Hotspot, users can also look forward to:

  • Airplay enhancements – Now streams video from your Photos app
  • Improved Safari performance – Runs JavaScript twice as fast as iOS 4.2
  • iTunes Home Sharing – Your iTunes library, including music and video, can be accessed from your PC or Mac via Wi-Fi using your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
  • Customize iPad side switch – Users can now use the iPad’s side switch to mute the device or lock screen rotation
According to the leaked AT&T document, the update will also include Facetime (which supports other devices including the Mac), Photobooth and iMovie for the iPad 2. Those with the original iPhone and iPhone 3G will have to watch others get the update from the sidelines since iOS 4.3 is not compatible with them.
