Discovering software for your netbook will become a tad easier when chip maker Intel releases its netbook bazaar next month. Intel’s application engineer Leigh Davies told the developers attending a seminar at the Game Developer Conference in Cologne, Germany, that the store exits beta and launches officially in September.
Called the AppUp Center, it’s going to be available online but Intel is also planning to pre-install a storefront client on netbooks. Despite hyping up the store over the past months, developers aren’t coming in droves. As a result, the AppUp Center’s launch lineup will be pretty modest, about 500 programs.
Like other stores, Intel’s bazaar offers roughly one third free apps while games are said to be the defining app category. The storefront is compact enough to fit low-resolution displays on notebooks. If it takes off, Intel could bring AppUp Center to notebooks and maybe even desktops. So far, the AppUp Center is meant only for Atom-based netbooks.
