Intel Atom processors will be used as the brain for 1000mph

It takes a lot of gas to juice a rocketcar capable of zooming across the desert at one thousand miles per hour… but, as it turns out, not a lot of power. At least in CPU terms. Intel have just announced that they will providing chips to the upcoming Bloodhound rocketcar, but counterintuitively, the Bloodhound’s brain won’t be running on their top-of-the-line, Core i7 chips… but rather, the cheap, power-saving Atom chipset.
At least three Intel Atoms of unknown model will control the Bloodhound’s propulsion system, according to the car makers, with two additional processors onboard the vehicle as a redundancy measure, making sure the Atom triumvirate doesn’t do anything stupid.
The array of Atom chips Intel will be installing in the Bloodhound rocketcar doesn’t end there: four Intel Atoms will also be deployed to help the driver stay on course. That’ll be a helpful aid, since even the slightest course deviation when driving at a thousand miles per hour could be disastrous.
So next time you pull out your netbook and sigh as it slowly boots to Windows, remember: Atom may not be powerful enough to satisfactorily drive Windows 7, but it is powerful enough to drive the fastest car on Earth.
