Apparently HP has very big plans for WebOS. And we’re not just talking about tablets and connected printers, Bloomberg is reporting that HP CEO, Leo Apotheker, told employees that as of next year all the computers HP ships will be able to run WebOS in addition to Microsoft Windows. It’s an ambitious move for the PC giant but also the type of thinking HP needs if it wants to be more than a PC manufacturer.
WebOS was developed by Palm and brought over to HP when they purchased the company last year. Ownership of the mobile operating system meant HP would no longer have to rely on a third-party OS (like Windows Phone 7 or Android) for its mobile devices, plus it would be able to utilized the lightweight software on other devices, like printers, tablets, and apparently computers.
This move won’t just create a differentiation point for HP’s computers, but it will massively increase the install base of WebOS, even if the PC isn’t currently (and still won’t be) the primary focus of the OS. Even so, as we know from the HP TouchPad tablet, it can scale to larger platforms. Putting in on the desktop will be a challenge, but it might work well as a quick-boot environment, especially on notebooks and netbooks.
