Perhaps you noticed that it is now possible to upgrade your graphics drivers using Steam. Lots of PC gamers have Steam on their computer, so this could be a quick and easy option to keep your gaming rig up-to-date.
The big improvement here is that Steam knows what graphics card you have, so it will ensure you are installing the right drivers to your computer.
Here’s how to do it:
Before you start, please note that this currently only works with AMD (ATI) graphics. You’ll have to use conventional methods to upgrade the graphics drivers for other companies’ products. Also, before you start, you should uninstall your old drivers.
  1. Install or start Steam.
  2. Go to the “Steam” pull-down menu and click “Update AMD Video Drivers…”
  3. Confirm the download
  4. When the download is finished click “Install Now”
  5. If you get a User Account Control warning from “Program name: CATALYST Install Manager”, with the “Verified Publisher: ATI Technologies, Inc” choose Yes.
  6. Let the installation run. At this point the resolution on your display might change (usually to 800×600 or something very small).
  7. Click Finish.
  8. At this point your resolution might still be too small (everything on-screen will look huge). If that’s the case just restart your computer and if the drivers installed properly the resolution will be correct when Windows comes back.

Wondering if the driver upgrade worked? Go back to Steam > “Update AMD Video Drivers…” and the program will tell you if you are up-to-date or not.
