So much press has been given in recent months to Research in Motion’s tablet aspirations with the upcoming BlackBerry Playbook that some of us have forgotten that RIM is still making some of the best smartphones on Earth. A leaked image of RIM’s new smartphone, the BlackBerry Dakota, is now here to set that right.
According to Boy Genius Report, the BlackBerry Dakota will be similar to the BlackBerry Bold. 10mm thin, it will boast a 2.8-inch VGA capacitive touchscreen, a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Tri-band UMTS radio, 4GB of internal storage, 768MB of RAM< 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1. Inside there’s a magnetometer, accelerometer, proximity sensor, 5 megapixel camera with internal LED flash and HD video, and a micro-USB port.
Intriguingly, like the Verizon iPhone, the BlackBerry Dakota will be able to function as a mobile 3G hotspot, tethering by WiFi to other devices. It also boasts an NFC or near-field-communications chip, opening the door to using the Dakota to make payments.
If you’re still loyal to a physical QWERTY, the BlackBerry Dakota is looking solid, although there’s no pricing or release information yet. Personally, though, we’re a little disappointed: we were hoping the next BlackBerry would at least give us a blushing peek at their new QNX OS.
