Though Sony has been tight lipped about the next version of their popular gaming console, there are chances that the PlayStation 3’s heir will be called Orbis. This might just be the code name for now, but with Vita already announced, Orbis Vita might be actually be a possibility. Why? Because according to sources, Vita itself is taken from a Latin name and the two together make it a ‘Circle of Life’ and there are chances that Vita will have a major part to play in the next PlayStation home console. As of now, there’s not much that has been revealed by the source, but there are chances that it will have an AMD x64 CPU, along with an AMD Southern Islands GPU, which might be capable of displaying games at a resolution of, wait for it, 4096 x 2160 pixels! Does this mean that 1080p resolutions will soon be looked down upon? Either way, for the love of technology, we’re pretty happy.

Moving on, it will also support playback of 3D games in 1080p. Also, ‘select developers’ have already gotten developer kits for this upcoming console, since the beginning of 2012 and the finalized beta sets will be brought towards the final quarter of 2012. So much time will only mean that developers will have a lot of time at hands to properly optimize everything to suit the upcoming monster console from Sony. It will also be ready, just in time for the 2013 holiday season. Another important thing to note is that the Orbis won’t support PS3 games and hence backward compatibility will no longer be an option. Sony is going to (or try to) put a stop to used games built into the console by locking it to a single PSN account. So, it stays locked to just your account and nobody else can have access to it. However, more details haven’t emerged and this could just be mere speculation as well.
