Dell’s Mini 5 Android Tablet to be called the Streak

A couple of months back, Dell CEO Michael Dell casually pulled a new Android tablet out of his satchel and began to demo it for eager tech journalists. Dell’s got a history of nonchalantly debuting Dell Mini products this way — he handled the announcement of the Dell Mini 9 netbook in just the same way — sending the blogsophere into a frenzy of anticipation.
Of course, with January 27th’s announcement of the iPad, it was easy to forget five-inch Dell’s Mini 5, but some new promotional material coming out of Dell is a nice reminder of just who sleek Dell’s tablet is.
Sized somewhere between the iPod Touch and the iPad, the Dell Mini 5 features a 5-inch WVGA touchscreen capable of a maximum resolution of 800 x 480, as well as a five megapixel camera with autofocus and flash (take that, iPad!), capacitive touch front buttons, a front facing VGA camera for video conferencing (take that, again iPad!).
We knew all of that, but the new promotional materials make a couple of new details clear. For one, Design Studio will offer the Mini 5 in a slew of finishes, colors and hues. Second, the Dell Mini 5 might be released under the name “Streak,” which is certainly better than the Mini 5 nomenclature.
But the last detail is most interesting: it looks like Dell is partnering with Amazon to ship the Streak with the Kindle e-book reader app and support, out-of-the-box, Amazon MP3 and Amazon Video On Demand. Given how lackluster the Kindle looks after the iPad’s announcement, this could be just the stop-gap product Amazon needs to give them time to revamp the Kindle line.
Either way, the Streak looks great. Unfortunately, though, we just still don’t know when we can buy one, or for how much.
