ASUS GTX 580 DirectCU II – Beast Inside Beast [Review]

Few days back we posted a news that ASUS is working on a custom version of HD6870 GPU with DirectCU custom made circuit board.
Now this time Asus is on other side making a NVIDIA’s flagship GeForce GTX 580, which will result in a more powerful voltage compartment for the GF110 GPU and a manly cooler with two 100mm fans.

To use the more powerful power circuitry and increase the clock frequencies without heat-related problems ASUS has developed a specially designed cooler for the DirectCU II family.

ASUS GTX 580 DirectCU II uses a full-cover design with five copper heatpipes with large aluminum fins and two sturdy fans. The 100x20mm fans have been developed specifically for the DirectCU 2 cooler that will be used by all of ASUS’ top models.
The 8-phase VRM draws power from two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors and boasts high-grade components, like a proadlizer made by NEC, whose purpose is to manage the power supplied to the GPU.
There is another interesting fact, that the power circuit is fully localized, making this a video controller that drawn absolutely no power from the PCI Express slot itself.
ASUS GTX 580 DirectCu will run at 80 degrees Celsius instead of the 90 of the reference model, and will produce a noise of 31 dBA (stock model has 42 dBA).
The launch date and price was not revealed yet.

ASUS GTX 580 DirectCU II specifications:

  • GF110 GPU
  • Dual 8-pin power connectors
  • Dual 100x20mm fans for low noise
  • 8 phase power supply for GPU
  • 2 phase power supply for memory (1 draws from 8-pin and one from PCIe slot)
  • More efficient power supply with more power per phase
  • Highly efficient NEC power capacitor behind GPU
  • Dual DVI outputs, HDMI and DisplayPort
  • DirectCU 2 cooler with 5 copper direct-contact heatpipes
  • Requires 3 expansion slots
