Apple switches to tamper-resistant screws for iPhone

We have all seen several images of dissected Apple iPhones over the years as hackers and enthusiasts try to discover the inner workings of Apple’s creation, or just want to fix an issue that would normally cost hundreds of dollars to repair officially.
Well it seems that Apple is a little tired of this and is looking to slowly replace the existing Phillips screws with a set of new tamper-resistant screws for all iPhone models. We say new, but according to iFixit the screws have already been used in some of its Macbook range and in non-US phones since 2009.
The main reasons for the change is that Apple want it to be a lot harder for people to take apart and mess about with the internals of the phone. The screw won’t be based on a standard Torx security screw, rather Apple is calling it a “Pentalobular” design which is similar to the aforementioned Torx screw yet it has five points instead of six and they have rounder edges.
At the time of its release there was no screwdriver currently available that could have worked with the screw, and if you could get one it would be very expensive. However, the guys over at iFixit have a solution with a pack they like to call the “iPhone 4 Liberation Kit” ($9.99) which contains a pack of standard Phillips screws and a hacked screw driver that has been re-engineered to fit the new type of screws.
The above will then allow you to remove the new screws and replace them with the standard Phillips ones (they don’t recommend you use the hacked screwdriver for repeated use, hence the reason for replacing the new screws with the older ones).
