Engadget has dug up a fresh FCC filing indicating that an Apple-branded multitouch gesture pad named the Magic Trackpad isn’t a vaporware after all. The surprising revelation led author Chris Ziegler to speculate that Apple might announce the device “as early as this week.”
Interestingly, it appears Apple has been lingering on this device for more than six months because the FCC completed its test report last October. The filing indicates the trackpad will communicate with target devices – presumably Macs – over Bluetooth. The test report says nothing about WiFi or WWAN connectivity, Engadget pointed out.
Magic Trackpad is rumored to take Apple’s work on Mac laptops, the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and translate it to the desktop realm. The same site first leaked blurry images of the device in the run-up to Steve Jobs’ WWDC 2010 keynote, speculating that Magic Trackpad will be unveiled at the event. That never came to be, prompting watchers to speculate whether Apple nixed the device altogether or took some time to perfect its design and prepare manufacturing.
