If your Time Capsule died on you, consider yourself lucky – Apple will definitely replace the faulty wireless appliance free of charge, even if you’ve already paid for a repair or replacement. According to an updated knowledge base document published on Apple’s site, the affected Time Capsules they’re recalling include the units sold between February and June 2008 with serial numbers in the range XX807XXXXXX – XX814XXXXXX.
If your Time Capsule has a serial number within that range, it’s most likely exhibiting serious hardware issues ranging from unexpected shut downs to the inability to power on, but that’s ultimately for an an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to confirm before they approve you for a replacement hardware.
People who already paid for a repair or replacement for their faulty unit can contact Apple for a refund provided they purchased the device between February and June 2008 and it carries a serial numbers in the range XX807XXXXXX – XX814XXXXXX. Apple was also kind enough to offer a mail-in service in the US and Japan for users who would like to have their dead Time Capsule replaced without losing any data.
Time Capsules spontaneously dying on their users, allegedly due to a faulty internal power supply, inspired a Dutch fan to create a website entitled TimeCapsuleDead where the affected owners could register their device as dead. According to Pim van Bochoven from the Netherlands, the owner of the site, about 2500 unfortunate owners registered failed Time Capsules in the four-month period between October 10, 2009 and February 15, 2010 – an average of nearly twenty submissions a day.
Perhaps in a nod at Time Capsule issues, Apple has updated its policy to allow users to replace the device’s internal hard drive without voiding the warranty.
