Anyone who is either strangely serious about their home movies or works in the film or broadcast media industries knows all about Final Cut Pro. Used in studios, schools and homes worldwide, Apple's advanced video-editing software is easily one of the most recognizable of the company's suite. Its latest rendition of Final Cut Studio ($999.99 direct) may cost as much as an entry-level MacBook, but professionals at least will want to see what this update has in store.
Design and Features
The star of the show, Final Cut Pro 7, makes use of Apple's own ProRes video codec that provides HD video output at SD file sizes, which the company claims is quickly becoming the standard in the industry. Apple has also redesigned its speed tools in Final Cut Pro 7, which it claims makes clip speed changes simpler while adding improved markers, a larger timecode window and a streamlined alpha transition creation. But you wouldn't buy the suite if it wasn't for the whole package, right?
For those looking to add some effects to their films or create their own 3D graphics, Motion 4 is where you find the tools to make it happen, according to Apple. With dramatic shadow and reflection creation on top of ways to modify the depth of field, Apple promises stunning motion graphics in both 2D and 3D. Since everyone knows that sound is equally important in film, Final Cut Studio includes Soundtrack Pro 3 with new multitrack editing tools like Waveform Zoom, RMS Normalize and new shortcuts for adding fades and trimming and extending clips.

Rounding out its list of products is Color 1.5, which allows for what Apple calls sophisticated color grading at a maximum of 4K resolution that works natively in formats like Sony XDCAM HD and, of course, Apple's ProRes. Top it all off with Compressor 3.5 for reportedly simplified transcoding, web publishing and disc creation. And with Final Cut Studio's rather low system requirements, this software will run on almost any Mac machine, according to Apple's numbers. For just under $1,000, Apple promises that Final Cut Studio will provide "editors with all the tools they need to edit, animate, mix, grade, and deliver."
