Rovio will soon have a whole new group of smartphone users to suck into the clutches of its addictiveAngry Birds franchise. Angry Birds was first released for iOS platforms in December 2009 and soon expanded to Google’s Android mobile OS in September 2010. Now Microsoft has confirmed aprevious report, by announcing that the game will be coming to Windows Phone 7 smartphones this spring.
Microsoft also announced other games for Windows Phone 7 coming in the spring as part of the company’s Spring Showcase games event in San Francisco. The games will be a part of Microsoft’s Must Have Games campaign for Windows Phone, include:
- Doodle Jump
- Plants vs Zombies
- Hydro Thunder Go
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I
- geoDefense
The introduction of Angry Birds to Windows Phone 7 comes during a time of impressive expansion for the franchise which has also targeted video game consoles including the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3and Nintendo Wii appeared on the Mac App Store.
To date, the game has been downloaded over 50 million times across all platforms. Due to its popularity, Roxio is exploring Angry Birds as a brand to include merchandise, televisions shows and movies. Merchandising is already expected to include a new Angry Birds board game by Mattel titledAngry Birds: Knock on Wood expected to be available in May 2011
