AMD CPUs will ship on 109 notebooks this summer

It’s been years since it could even be charitably said that AMD was keeping pace with Intel, at least in the desktop and notebook markets. While AMD keeps its head above water when it comes to servers, AMD isn’t even licking the shoes of Intel when it comes to the success of their other chips.
How bad is it? Consider this: last year, AMD was responsible for only 12.1% of worldwide CPU shipments, while Intel accounted for an amazing 87.8%. That’s total. When you drill the numbers down, it looks even worse: last year, for example, only 40 laptop models shipped using AMD processors.
There’s good news for AMD, though: it looks like this year is going to be one of their best in recent memory. This year, AMD is shipping CPUs in 109 separate mainstream notebook models, with many of the best coming in time for the end summer, or “back to school” shopping season.
AMD is shipping so many CPUs due to its ongoing efforts to simplify its line-up, as well as decrease power consumption while improving performance. That’s a good first step, but AMD’s got a long way to go before it’s ready to be taken seriously by Intel again.
