Adobe officially announced the launch of Adobe Creative Suite 5 ( Adobe CS5 ), coming out on April 12th, 2010!

Adobe Creative Suite 5, the twelfth major release in the best-selling series of image editing software, will air April 12, 2010. It's expected to bring a number of advanced technologies, like three dimensional brushes and warping tools. It also is expected to bring more aggressive use of the GPU, including improved utilization of the CUDA GPU computing technology found on NVIDIA graphics cards (CS4 was the first Adobe Creative Suite to utilize CUDA).

As if that wasn't enough to tempt users to update, the company has aired a video previewing a new feature which it calls "Content-Aware Fill". The feature allows the user to fill in a selection based on the surrounding regions.

Graphically, the results are stunning. In one demo Bryan O’Neil-Hughes, a product manager on the Photoshop team, used the tool to first remove lens flare, turn rough litter-strewn grass into a perfectly manicured lawn, and even remove trees seen in the distance.

In the next demo he removes a dusty road from a desert scene. The tool automatically fills the replacement area with appropriate ground and shrub cover. Finally, he takes another desert scene -- a cloud sky with bits on the top and bottom missing. The tool replaces these bits seamlessly.

At first glance the results are hard to distinguish from an unaltered photo. That's exciting news for professional designers. Its also exciting news for amateur photoshoppers, who enjoy an occasional session of "put one person's head on another person's body."

The feature looks like it will reduce what might have once been hours or days of work down to a few seconds of wait time.Adobe Creative Suite 5, the twelfth major release in the best-selling series of image editing software, will air April 12, 2010. Adobe CS5 release date – April 21-22

A digital printing conference in Texas is advertising that Adobe will be announcing a new product that’s part of its ’signature suite’ in April. Further details were not announced but the event’s website says that that this is a brand new application.

Listed as an ‘Adobe Technology Preview’ by Noha Edell, business development manager for cross media publishing solutions at Adobe, the site for the Emerge conference in San Antonio on April 21-22 says that “Adobe will unveil a brand new application as part of its signature suite of services. Be among the first to see why this is sure to surprise even the most “in the know” Adobe fans”.

Adobe’s “signature suite” is a clear reference to the Adobe Creative Suite. There’s no indication if the new product is part of the next version of Adobe Creative Suite 5 ( CS5 ), but Adobe is well known to work to an 18-month release schedule – and April 2010 is 18 months since the release of Adobe Creative Suite 4.

It’s also not necessarily a creative tool – though it is listed under the ‘Design’ stream of seminars – and considering where the launch is happening, could well be a new version of Acrobat.

Adobe CS5 will ship in April 2010

Piper Jaffray – leading international middle market investment firm, believes investors will start getting positioned for Adobe CS5 now, given the historical CS cycle peak multiple occurs 1-6 months prior to ship. Piper expects Adobe CS5 will ship in April 2010

Adobe Systems (ADBE) is expected to report Q2 earnings after the market close on Tuesday, June 16, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET.
Guidance

The consensus estimate is 35c for EPS and $694.75M for revenue, according to First Call. The company has been able to top quarterly expectations in each of the last four quarters. On its last earnings call, Adobe management provided Q2 guidance of 31c to 38c in EPS and revenue of $675M to $725M.
Analyst Views

Also on that call, Adobe CFO Mark Garrett had had reported that the company has seen its business stabilize since early February, and added that Adobe’s North America business is “closer to a bottom.” The recession has slowed demand in the past couple of quarters for Adobe’s Creative Suite 4, or CS4, the newest version of the software package that brings in the majority of the company’s revenue. But analysts now say that demand for the product looks to be improving amid hopes for an economic recovery.

In a June 10 note, Jefferies analyst Ross MacMillan said that a recent survey by Jefferies “suggests that creative professionals continue to adopt CS4 at a steady pace and there is an increase in the number of individuals that intend to upgrade.”

Based on Piper’s US distributor checks and NPD data the firm expects slight upside on revenue and EPS for Q2, with guidance for Q3 essentially in-line with consensus of 33c on $676.05M in revenue, assuming a Q3 seasonal quarter-over-quarter downtick. While still a few quarters out, Piper believes investors will start getting positioned for CS5 now, given the historical CS cycle peak multiple occurs 1-6 months prior to ship. Piper expects CS5 will ship in April 10.

Thomas Weisel says that while Adobe did indicate in its last report that it was seeing signs of stabilization in the February-March timeframe in its channel, the firm is modeling an 11% sequential decline in Q2 revenue to $701M and a flattish Q3 . Although European-end markets, which is 35% of total revenue, are likely to remain weak for a few more months, Weisel believes that Adobe has been able to put some pricing increases through in some regions, such as the U.K. The firm also expects the Education market, one of Adobe’s largest verticals, to help bridge the gap in Q3 as it shifts to CS4 for the Fall semester. Overall, Weisel suspects visibility is starting to improve somewhat for Adobe as the U.S. shows signs of stabilization and management continues to focus on expense controls.

The new brush tools aim to match that found within Corel’s Painter application. The video shows ‘wet’ paints being smudged, smeared and blended. It also shows an on-screen representation of the 3D properties of a brush, showing how it has been twisted to lay down different stroke types.
A similar system After Effects’ Puppet tool has been added to Photoshop CS5, enabling artists to warp image by placing pins into areas to lock them down, then moving the areas around them. An overlaid grid shows how the image is warped.
