Mobile hardware has come a long way since smartphones first arrived on the scene and today’s high-end handsets can compete with well-outfitted PCs in terms of hardware. And now Samsung has taken the first step in bringing mobile RAM on par with PCs. The world leader in RAM production has announced the production of industry’s first 4Gb Low Power Double Data Rate 3 (LPDDR3) mobile DRAM, manufactured using a 20nm class process.

The new DRAM module enables performance levels comparable to the standard of DRAM used in PCs. This means the new module is a perfect solution for demanding games and multimedia-intensive apps on your next high-end smartphone and tablet.

“By providing the most efficient next-generation mobile memory with a very large data capacity, we are now enabling OEMs to introduce even more innovative designs in the marketplace,” said Young-Hyun Jun, Executive Vice President, Memory Sales & Marketing, Samsung Electronics. “Our 20nm-class four gigabit mobile DRAM provides another example of our ability to deliver well-differentiated, high-performance, high-density memory to customers in a timely manner.”

The new LPDDR3 module can transmit data at up to 2,133Mbps per pin, more than doubling the performance of the preceding LPDDR2 DRAM. Maximum data transmission speed is 800Mbps and this will make it possible to transmit three full HD videos, collectively 17GB in length, in one second over the new chip. It is also designed to fully utilise full HD displays five inches or larger. In comparison to a 30nm-class LPDDR3 DRAM, Samsung claims the new module improves overall performance by 30 percent and results in up to 20 percent more in power savings.

Samsung has also accounted for the changing nature of smartphones, where battery life is turning out to be a major sorepoint. The company says that by adopting its new 4Gb LPDDR3 DRAM, smartphone manufacturers can have a 2GB package that meets the memory package height of 0.8 mm and thus, won't have to sacrifice on the space that could be utilised to pack in a bigger capacity battery.
