Videocon Unveils Zeus Android Phone

Videocon Unveils Zeus Android Phone for Rs. 12,900

Just a couple of days after we tested the Spice Mi-300, an inexpensive feature-rich handset running Google's Android 2.1 OS, Videocon officially declares its version of the same. Dubbed as the Zeus V7500, this 3.5G ready phone has a fairly sized 3.2-inch multi-touch screen. The screen bears an HVGA (320 x 480 pixel) resolution and is capacitive in nature, just like the Apple iPhone. The resolution is also comparatively higher than what many Android phones from multi-national manufacturers are selling at this point. Its ability to crunch numbers is served by the Qualcomm 600 MHz processor. Wi-Fi and aGPS connectivity are also present to take advantage of the highly Internet-dependent and location-aware apps for the Android OS.

Speaking of the OS, the Zeus comes with Android 1.6 but is termed as "Android 2.1 Eclair Ready". Ideally, it would've been nice if it ran 2.1 from start; but let's hope they deliver the update very soon nonetheless. Multi-media wise, this phone's loaded with a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with an LED flash. The camera also boasts "24 FPS (Frames Per Second)" video recording, which, going by the numbers, sounds smooth. There's an accelerometer for auto-rotation of the screen according to the way you hold it. If you've been comparing the Spice Mi-300 to this one, you'll see both the phones are very similar specs-wise. Where Videocon trumps the former is in the bundle. It is pushing in two batteries of a 1230 mAh rating with the phone. Then, there's also a pre-bundled 8GB memory card (whereas, the Spice came with 2GB).

The official price of the Videocon Zeus is Rs. 12,900 but we saw it selling online for almost Rs. 2,000 cheaper. The phone comes with a year of warranty and 6 months for its accessories. With a good mix of features and an affordable pricing, yet another Indian mobile company is shaking up the smartphone market in India. We can only assume that a Micromax, Lemon, Lava or a Karbonn would soon follow suit. This is sure to put quite a pressure on bigwigs like HTC, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, whose handsets are priced a little higher, that too with a compromise on a feature or two here and there.
