Micromax Canvas 2 Colors A120 Review: Buy it or not?

Micromax is fastest growing OEM Company in India who has presented some of the most popular devices like Canvas 2 and Canvas turbo, etc. Yes, Micromax presents Smartphones with great hardware capabilities with the lowest price tag as compared to Samsung and Sony. And one time more, Micromax has launched its Canvas 2 Colors A120 which directly competes with the Moto G of Motorola. The Company has revealed it with a price tag of Rs. 9500 (approx.) which is another plus point to buy along with high hardware capabilities and guaranteed update to Android 4.4.2 kitKat. Let’s explore and find out how it is suited for you.

Design And Build

Canvas 2 Colors has solid build and great ergonomics. There is no plastic feel, all you get is solid handset and tough backpanels. A120 is bundled with two extra backpanels along with the phone depending on which color you bought. As we got Yellow and Aqua Blue along with the Black Back Panel.

Moving up to the design which is average at all. A120 on the same generic design of Canvas series, you can’t see much difference and doesn’t impress at all. Front view owns the 720p Display along with some sort of motion sensors and front camera at the top placed aside of the earpiece grill and to the down of the screen is the capacitive keys which illuminates on touch. It has Notification Light at top near earpiece grill. It glows red or green depending upon the type of notification.

At the left it has volume rockers and to the right is the power button and micro USB and earphone jack is shifted on top. Yet the placement of the power button is a bit inconvenient, as sometimes it is hard to click it while operating with single hand.

Backpanel owns a primary camera to the top left corner with LED Flash and speaker grill is placed at lower left corner. Since it is 5 Inched Smartphone then also you can sufficiently handle it with a single hand.

Display

One you miss in A120 is the Corning Gorilla Glass protection. While if it doesn’t matters you then Canvas 2 colors succeeds in display for its price range giving great picture quality. With 293.72 PPI pixel density and 720p HD IPS display all you get is super sharp and super bright display providing better viewing angles.

With ambient light sensors it gains automatic brightness adjustments while also has a wide range of color producing capability which is about 16.7 million.

Camera

A120’s camera is great for clicking pictures outdoors as well as indoors. It gives you the combination of 8 MP Primary and 2 MP secondary camera which is enough to make HD video through Primary camera and take Selfies or make video calls.

Rear snapper is the 8 MP sensor with LED Flash and extra features like face detection and Auto Focus. For outdoors camera works the best and doesn’t let you feel lag while it will be in indoors. For low light condition it has LED Flash support while the Low light performance of the camera and flash is also way better than any other Canvas series phone.

You will this time not get full HD videos while 720p recording is just fine, but not vivid. Images captured renders accurate colors and sharpness with some exceptions for indoors.

Hardware and Performance

It does have a strong hardware system which comprises of a 1.3 GHz MT6582 Quad Core Processor and 1 GB RAM which pumps up device regular as well as gaming performance. However, talking about its processor which is a MTK6582 gives less performance as compared to MTK6589T or MTK6589 or MTK6589M which is available in Xolo Q700, Canvas 4 and Titanium S5. While all of them is headed up Snapdragon 400 of Moto G.

For storage it has 4 GB ROM in which 0.98 GB is available for Apps and has 1.61 GB of User Memory which can be expanded upto 32 GB with MicroSD Card.

Since it has Quad Core Processor and HD Display, both these feature consumes more power. Its 2000mah battery is inadequate to power this phone for the whole day. The Battery percentage drops 1% in every 5 minutes while using this phone for surfing net or playing games. While being fine for normal usage.

It’s back gets heated while charging, playing games, surfing net or while in a call. Sometimes its heat is so much that you can’t hold phone for long. And despite having 1GB RAM, due to heavy customization of UI and sort of crappy apps this phone has less usable RAM. Like out of 968 MB of RAM, you will get around 550-600 MB RAM used by its internal applications.

But renders great performance and never lags in its heavily customized environment or while playing high end games. It gives considerably good results in the Antutu benchmark which is 16990-17083 and that of Moto G is about 17860- 18050. You can play around very HD game in A120 including fifa14 , Asphalt 8 , Asphalt 7, Dead trigger 2 , Real steel , Dead effect , Dead space, Gt racing 2 , GTA san-andreas and Vice City while it can run normal games like subway surfers and temple run with ease.

Software and Sensors

Canvas 2 Colors comes with Android 4.2.2 out of the box and Micromax assures to provide an update to the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The user interface looks neat and fresh with new icons and colored backgrounds.
