Micromax A116 Canvas HD is now upgradable to Android 4.2.1 JellyBean. The update is now available only through Micromax service centers. This is not an OTA (over-the-air) upgrade. But the OTA functionality is included in the firmware which means if in future it gets Android 4.3 JellyBean (possibly v4.2.2) it will be the first OTA update. The news is very encouraging for the current users of Canvas HD as majority of the recently launched quad core devices are running v4.2.1 JellyBean.
According to MMXNewsCaster Micromax have included several bug fixes, new features in this firmware. Few of the enhanced features are-
1. Better GPS locking system, current firmware delays in locking GPS
2. Panorama mode in camera module was missing but it’s been included here
3. Better notification system
4. Enhanced voice assistance
and few other features should be there.

Android 4.2 update for Micromax Canvas HD out now

Android 4.2 update for Micromax Canvas HD out now; brings OTA support and more

Micromax has begun rolling out updates for its flagship Canvas HD smartphone and this brings the low-cost quad-core phone up to version Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Surprisingly, this is just a 4.2.1 update and not for 4.2.2, which is the most up-to-date version of the OS. The update was spotted by Micromax blogger MMXnewscaster.

Canvas HD also gets a fix for delay in GPS location lock and the camera gets a panorama mode, in addition to the usual Android 4.2 improvements and features. That includes quick toggles to the notification drawer, lockscreen widgets, offline voice typing and sundry performance improvements.

Customers can get the update for their Canvas HD through the company’s sales and service centres. Just like the Jelly Bean update for the A110 Canvas 2, there’s no over-the-air (OTA) infrastructure in place so you’ll have to walk into the store and should ideally get back your handset within a couple of hours. However, MMXnewscaster reports that the update brings OTA support for future updates, so this roundabout way of getting the update for the Canvas HD will ideally end thanks to this update.

This could turn out to be a crucial update for Micromax’s top-of-the-line phones, which have so far had a comfortable time in the market. But with low-cost, high-specced phones coming out of the woodwork nearly every week, the company now has to up its game. Setting up an OTA update mechanism to their phones will give them a competitive edge over their rivals.

We have reached out to the company to understand if this same treatment will be afforded to other Micromax smartphones soon and will be updating this story accordingly.
